Stone Fox

Book Summary:
Willy and his grandfather look after their potato farm, until Grandfather becomes sick and Willy has to find enough money to keep the land. Will he and his dog Searchlight find a way to look after Grandfather and stay together? Book Review: This book is short and fast-paced, and shows a young person in a difficult situation. There is a death of a character in this book. A heartbreaking, surprising death, for which you may need Kleenex. There is also the perpetuation of racist stereotyping, contrasting Willy as a hard worker who is just trying to do the right thing with Stone Fox as unfeeling, mysterious, and violent. As of 2018, this book has been removed from Lucy Calkins' Units of Study materials, in an effort to examine books with more inclusive messages. "If your teacher doesn't know, you ask me.
