Book Summary:
A Danish girl and her family shelter a Jewish friend during World War II. As Annemarie and her younger sister, Kirsti, begin to see their neighborhood streets changing - from armed soldiers in the streets to shops closing - life changes abruptly when the soldiers come knocking at their door. Is Annemarie brave enough to do what it takes to save her best friend? Book Review: This short book is excellent for a read-aloud or small group study. The vocabulary and symbolism are relatively simple, making the book accessible for upper elementary audiences. At the same time, it introduces some complex ideas about justice, bravery, and history.
