Book Summary: Simon Snow is having a weird life. His return to magic school is stranger than usual, because he's feeling distant from his girlfriend, the headmaster is avoiding him, and his sullen vampire roommate is missing - and no one seems especially worried about it. Magic, mystery, romance, and a search for identity are combined in this fanfiction novel. This book is the first in the Simon Snow series. Book Review: Some people adamantly deny that this book is fanfiction, and the author's page refers to it as canon instead - but if your author page has an explanation about whether a book is fanfiction or canon, you can see how people might decide otherwise, particularly if the book heavily mirrors one of the bestselling series of all time. I picked up this book solely because I knew of the author, but I knew nothing about the story. As I read it, I found it hard to get over element after element borrowed from Harry Potter, spliced with a dash of angsty Edward from Twilight. There's a brainy female best friend who's always up for adventure, a headmaster who takes an unusual interest in the protagonist - who is known as the "chosen one" at the magical boarding school, a shady wealthy family set up to be villains against all that is good and right, and a number of other comparisons. However, this book clearly targets older readers, with a focus on mature relationships over action and adventure. The writing has some gorgeous detail and self-deprecating humor, and is likely to appeal to romance fans. "I'm not asking anybody what I should wear when I leave. I'm 18. I'll dress myself. |
