Red Thread Sisters
|
Book Summary:
Wen and Shu Ling live in an orphanage in China, and they're glad to have each other. When Wen is adopted by an American family and brought home to be an older sister in a middle class home, there are a lot of changes to get used to. Language, school, food, privacy, social customs - all of these things are new for Wen, and while she is happy about some of the new things, she desperately misses her friend back in China. Book Review: This is a thoughtful look at international adoption, as well as examining lifestyles through the eyes of someone adjusting to a completely new system. It's accessible to independent readers, but it would also be valuable for a small group discussion, especially since the messages about the difficulties of being new to a place - no matter what the degree - will resonate with middle grade readers. Wen's loyalty to her friend is touching and raises awareness about older children waiting to find adoptive families. "Red Thread Sisters" |
