Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales (Series)
|
Book Summary:
This biography tells the story of Araminta, who is better known to the world as Harriet Tubman, who led hundreds of people to freedom on the Underground Railroad. This book is one in a series full of books about detailed historical moments written in humorous comic book form. Other books in this series include:
One Dead Spy Big Bad Ironclad Donner Dinner Party Treaties, Trenches, Mud, and Blood Alamo All-Stars Raid of No Return - see below Lafayette! A Revolutionary War Tale Book Review: If history were taught this way, students would all be clamoring for more. There are all kinds of interesting human details based on his extensive research, presented in a funny way, even though the topics are often serious and the events are sometimes disturbing. Sometimes the details are gross, but the truth and humor overpower that for some readers - and the gross details are a definite draw for others. The hook in the story is that Nathan Hale (the spy - not the author) is about to be killed, but if he tells an interesting enough story to the provost and the hangman, they will prolong his execution. Their asides and questions are interspersed within the narrative. This is definitely a book to recommend to students who love action, history, and humor. It would also work well as a small group discussion in conjunction with a social studies investigation about the Civil War. Fun Fact: This author visited our school and told us a short historical story he had not published, but had researched extensively. As he talked, he sketched notes to illustrate the events. He had several hundred people - adults and students alike - laughing and captivated. "As soon as you leave this carrier, you are in charge of your own plane. You will have to decide what to do." |
