Book Summary:
The book opens with Cassia's match banquet. At the age of seventeen, citizens who do not plan to be Singles attend an elaborate ceremony in which they are matched to a partner by the Society. After Cassia's match is announced, there is a glitch that makes her question everything about her life . . . should she follow the Society's plan and accept that they know best? Or is there something better out there, something that would make her so happy it would be worth rejecting all the rules she's ever known? The second book is Crossed and the third book is Reached.
Book Review: This book combines the best elements of books like The Hunger Games and The Giver. It offers a wealth of good discussion topics. There are places where Cassia's character is a bit self-indulgent, but it makes her highly relatable to the target audience. Although a love triangle propels most of the story, Cassia's other relationships - particularly with her grandfather - are interesting and worthwhile. "Is there any way to make the words last? If only we still knew how to write instead of just type things into our scribes. Then I could write them down again someday. Then I might be able to have them when I am old."
