Love That Dog
|
Book Summary:
This book is told in a series of reluctantly written poems by Jack, an elementary student. Many of the poems are written directly to his teacher and talk about how Jack doesn't understand or agree with ideas in the poems she has shared with the class (an appendix of these poems is included). Some of the poems are inspired by poems read in class, and Jack's own poetry gradually reveals a story about a beloved golden retriever. Book Review: This is a very sweet book. Although the story has sad elements, the tone is generally light and very relatable for middle and upper elementary students. The writing is charming and deceptively simple (fans of The Unfinished Angel by this author might recognize this same quality). The love for words and poets permeates the story without being overly preachy or distant for young readers. Any dog lover will connect to the touching affection expressed in this book.
