9) Warp Speed by Lisa Yee
I love this author and this book, which is part of the Rancho Rosetta Middle School quartet. Each of those books focuses on a different character, and their stories overlap, but even with some repetition of information from book to book, the change in perspective and character voice is everything. This title and Millicent Min, Girl Genius, are my favorites. Here, an awkward middle schooler has lost his best friend and fellow Trekkie to the popular table at lunch and to basketball practice on weekends and after school. While he's avoiding his ever-present school bully, the rest of the school discovers his running talent, and overnight, popularity is in reach for Marley - if he wants it.

I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of students and families in IA, CT, NC, MO, TX, and Canada. I love being a teacher-librarian! Categories
