1979 - Newbery Medal Winner
If you like complicated mysteries with lots of characters, you will love this book. Sixteen potential heirs move into a brand new apartment building, and each one is connected to Sam Westing, the eccentric millionaire. One of them is responsible for his death. One of them will win millions. One heir is a bomber, one is a high-school track star, one is an ornithologist, and one will go to any lengths for attention.
This is an outstanding mystery that treats student readers like adults. While the vocabulary, cast of characters, and plot complexity are a bit demanding, the reward is worth it.
