Mark is dying, so he runs away to climb to the top of Mount Rainier with his camera, a notebook, and his dog, Beau, so he can at least have something on his own terms.
This book deals with serious topics, but readers fond of sad stories will be glad to find this title. Mark's relationship with his dog is portrayed in a heartfelt way that any pet-lover will appreciate, and his reflections about life, freedom, and choices pose some thoughtful questions about what people do with the time they are given to live.
The best discussion questions, of course, are generated by and contemplated by readers. These questions are designed to avoid major spoilers about the book, and to provide a starting point for teachers, parents, and student reading groups.
