The Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell

Book Summary

Ramon is thrilled to finally be allowed to work alongside his father and the other pearl divers.  Anxious to prove himself, he goes in search of a legendary large pearl, with the help of a native fisherman.  To take it, he must risk the wrath of the manta diablo, who lives in an underwater cave.  Is the manta diablo just a scary story to frighten children?  Or is it a gigantic beast that will take revenge on those who disturb its territory?
