2014 - E.B. White Read-Aloud Honor Book
Willow is a quirky genius, with a better-than-average 12-year-old knowledge of medical conditions. Counting by 7s is a way of calming herself - and after her adoptive parents are killed in a car crash, she could use some calming - and a new family.
Willow is a quirky character who may not appeal to everyone, and this book is all about characterization. However, the fact that Willow is different holds its own appeal for readers - even if they don't specifically connect to the ways she is different from most people. This book's focus on a character surviving without parents is a fairly common premise, but it maintains its distinctiveness. It's a favorite with many students.
